Founded in 1928 by Mícheál Mac Liammóir and Hilton Edwards, the Gate Theatre marks its 90th anniversary this year. As part of the Decade of Commemorations, Dublin City Library & Archive has devised an exhibition from its own collections to celebrate both men, who at the end of their careers received the Honorary Freedom of Dublin. Prodigiously talented, Mícheál was an accomplished artist, actor, playwright, set, stage and book designer, author and multi-lingual translator. He was born in London as Alfred Willmore but re-invented himself as an Irishman, becoming fluent in the Irish language and speaking English with a marked Co. Cork brogue. The exhibition will showcase the Gate Theatre collections of the Irish Theatre Archive, especially the Patricia Turner Collection and the Sheila and Carmel Leahy Collection. All three women were close to Edwards and Mac Liammoir and their collections offer a personal insight to illuminate their work and energy.
