Edward James is internationally renowned as a patron of the arts, a poet, and as the creator of the fantastical sculptures at 'Las Pozas' in Mexico. Less is known about his passion for gardening and his characteristic style of letter writing. Ivan Hicks was Head Gardener at West Dean College and Monkton House between 1973 and 1984. His friendship with James saw them travel together to Eire, Italy and Mexico developing various projects, as well as a richly decorated correspondence which can now be considered a collection of 'Mail Art'. An exhibition of material from the Edward James Archive will accompany a talk by Ivan Hicks. The archive material on display will include examples of the colourful and playful letters that were exchanged between them and reveal another side of a culturally significant figure, who was instrumental in the development of avant-garde art in the twentieth century.
